[O]n Wednesday Penrith & District Farmers’ Mart LLP held their weekly sale of 2,043 Prime Sheep, comprising of 1,033 Prime Lambs and 1,010 Cast Ewes & Rams.

On the week considering the trade nationally an overall average of 184p/kg was achieved. Quality still sold to premium prices, with better bred lambs easily 200p/kg plus.

Topping the sale at 303.0p/kg (£115) was a 38kg Beltex lamb from Miss K Gough, Galloper Park, purchased by West Scottish Lamb, Carlisle.

Meat and weight was the key once again, with Messrs TF & GL Pollock, Wreay Hall Farm selling Suffolk X lambs weighing 47kg to £90 (191p/kg), bought by Mr M Bowe, and 49kg realising £93 to Farmers Fresh Wales.

A very strong ewe trade was witnessed, with heavy ewes being much dearer, a good £8-£10 up on the week.

Suffolk Ewes topped at £125 for a pen from Messrs F Errington & Son, Hyde Park, purchased by Mr P Burton. An entry of 180 Suffolk ewes averaged £96.00.

A large number of Texel X Mule ewes were forward, and achieved £100 easily, topping at £116.

A pen of twelve meaty Swaledale ewes realised £53 from Messrs W Richardson & Son, Ghyll House, bought by Mutch Meats. A very lean offering of horned ewes were forward throughout the sale.

Today we also held our 2018 Young Handlers Prime Lamb Show. A huge well done to all involved, the quality and presentation was fantastic. The show was kindly judged and sponsored by Val Edmondson and Briony Davey from the Lake District National Park.

The 2018 Champion, and receiving The Inglewood Edge Trophy was awarded to Keeley Gough, Galloper Park, Tebay, with her 38kg Beltex Lamb, selling for £115.

The reserve honours went to Charlotte Elliott, Bank House, Mungrisedale, with her 39kg Beltex Lamb, selling for £100.
