[C]reate kaleidoscopes, interact with light and shadow to become a ‘living statue’ – just some of the free self-led activities at Lakeland Arts venues this summer.

Families can get crafty at Abbot Hall Art Gallery and the Museum of Lakeland Life & Industry in Kendal and at Blackwell, The Arts & Crafts House at Bowness-on-Windermere.

At Abbot Hall Art Gallery, Kendal, families can be inspired in two ways by the Elisabeth Frink exhibition Fragility and Power.

Children and adults can interact with light and shadow to become a living statue inspired by Frink’s sculptures. More details: https://www.abbothall.org.uk/strikeapose

Next door at Museum of Lakeland Life & Industry take part in Summer Holiday Crafts inspired by our Votes for Women display. More details: https://www.lakelandmuseum.org.uk/holidaycrafts.

You can also become roving reporters as part of our exhibition From Wordsworth to the Web: 200 Years of the Westmorland Gazette. Take a picture in our selfie board and become the headline story, or get to work in our mini newsroom and write your own headlines. Separate real from fake news.

Go psychedelic at Blackwell, The Arts & Crafts House at Bowness-on-Windermere and experience the Time Mirror installation which is part of Lakes Ignite 2018. Visitors can experiment with this unique kaleidoscopic artwork on the lawn, shoot videos or take funky photos to share with friends. This summer, Abbot Hall Art Gallery has major exhibitions of work by Elisabeth Frink and Auguste Rodin. Museum of Lakeland Life & Industry also has several displays relating to Votes for Women and the exhibition From Wordsworth to the Web: 200 Years of the Westmorland Gazette.

Shannon Quigley, Lakeland Arts’ Learning and Engagement Officer, said: “There are fantastic exhibitions and displays across all our venues. Running alongside them are a host of self-led activities to get families having fun and being creative together.

“We also have children’s menus at Abbot Hall’s Bakestone Cafe and in the Tea Room at Blackwell meaning you can enjoy culture and culinary delights during your visit.”

There is an admission charge for adults at the venues. Under 5’s and full-time students get free entry and children aged 6-16 years by donation. National Art Pass holders get a 50% discount.
