Skelton Show returns for its 130th year this weekend.

Organisers said the event, on Saturday July 4, one of Cumbria’s longest-running agricultural shows, promises to be a celebration of its rich heritage and vibrant future.

Behind the scenes, volunteers and committee members have been working tirelessly to create a memorable anniversary event, they said.

This year’s show will feature an exciting line-up of attractions, including the popular Tom Longton and his talented sheepdogs as they attempt to round up a flock of mischievous ducks.

Visitors can also enjoy the fast-paced action of scurry racing, the Concours d’Elegance and the thrills of Cumberland & Westmorland Wrestling, which this year includes the prestigious Under-18 Junior World Championship.

Families will find plenty to keep younger visitors entertained, with Circus Oz bringing hands-on circus workshops and tightrope experiences, while the hugely popular Biking Vikings return once again with their action-packed performances.

Thomas the Tank Engine will also be offering train rides around part of the showground, providing a unique perspective of the event.

Part of the Forty Farms outdoor exhibition will be on display, giving visitors the opportunity to meet photographer Amy Bateman and learn more about her project celebrating the people and landscapes that shape our rural communities.

Animal lovers will be delighted by displays from The Owl Trust, while a new attraction for the show sees the arrival of Bingfield Alpacas, which will be located near the South Gate entrance alongside the ever popular Native Breeds.

A display of vintage machinery and classic vehicles is also set to be a major attraction, with around 100 vintage tractors and cars already entered.

Combined with the extensive livestock and horse sections, there will be activity and competition taking place across the showground throughout the day.

Visitors will also be able to meet members of the mounted police.

The popular craft & gifts marquee and bustling food hall will offer plenty of opportunities to shop, browse and sample local produce, while live cookery demonstrations from some of the region’s leading chefs will provide inspiration and entertainment throughout the day.

Plus there will be the chance to view the varied and splendid displays entered in the Industrial and Horticultural marquee

With thousands expected to attend, organisers are encouraging visitors to purchase tickets in advance online.

While efforts will be made to provide wi-fi on the showground, the rural location means connectivity may be limited, and visitors are advised to bring cash where possible.

Skelton Show chairman Nina Oxley said: “Reaching our 130th anniversary is a tremendous achievement and a testament to the generations of volunteers, exhibitors, competitors and visitors who have supported the show over the years.

“While we are proud of our heritage and agricultural roots, we are equally excited to welcome new attractions and experiences which will ensure there is something for everyone to enjoy.

“Most importantly, none of this would be possible without our incredible team of volunteers. They have worked exceptionally hard to make this year’s anniversary show a celebration worthy of the occasion and we look forward to welcoming everyone on July 4.”

Advance tickets should be bought from www.skeltonshow.com or people can bring cash as organisers cannot guarantee card payments will work due to the show’s location.
