Record fundraising for local charity’s Morecambe Bay Walk

[S]upporters of Friends of the Lake District raised over £11,000 following their trek across the shifting sands of the Morecambe Bay at the end of July.

Spurred on by a light breeze, they enjoyed superb views across the bay, out to the sea, and over the Lake District fells they were helping protect.

Over 400 people took part, from a very small child who was carried across by a strong parent, up to some hardened and well-seasoned walkers, and even a few four-legged friends who particularly enjoyed their paddle through the gullies.

“It’s a unique walk and although we’ve explored many of the Lake District’s fells, valleys and footpaths we’ve never done anything quite like this,” commented one of the walkers on the day.

Another walker, Sue, said: “It was quite hard and probably the nearest I’ll get to being in an army on a dangerous route… or the Israelites being led across the Red Sea!”

As well as everyone successfully completing the four hour walk, supporters raised over £11,000 towards Friends of the Lake District’s work protecting the landscapes of Cumbria and the Lake District.

Friends of the Lake District Fundraiser, Rachel Damms, said: “We are very grateful to everyone who worked so hard to raise sponsorship. The Lake District may look rugged and wild but it is also a very fragile landscape and this money will help us ensure it is protected for us all to enjoy for many generations to come.”

Friends of the Lake District would like to thank Brewin Dolphin who kindly sponsored the event.
