The Beacon Museum’s popular Talking Tuesday events are set to return.
The weekly sessions, open to all, offer guests a café-style environment with refreshments, accompanied by light-hearted talks at the Whitehaven museum.
The events formerly ran until 2013 and Alan Irwin of the Beacon Museum thinks people will be delighted to see their return. He said: “Talking Tuesdays were a mainstay of museum life – an opportunity to meet over a brew and listen to a short talk. In the past they were spearheaded by staff such as Averil Dawson and the late Anne Cook, who each possessed an encyclopaedic knowledge of local history that they loved to share. This connection to this much-loved event is partly why there is a resounding desire to see it return.”
He added: “We are beginning with some local speakers who are no strangers to the museum, and we have something completely different each month.”
The first Talking Tuesday event is on October 9 at 2pm, and they will run on the second Tuesday of each month through the autumn and winter months.
At the first event, local researcher Joseph Ritson will discuss the legacy of local First World War heroes, and in November, Deputy Naval Lord Lieutenant for Cumbria Col Tom McMullen will discuss the history of the American Wild West. Other months will feature music, literature and art, presented by Cumbrian residents.
Alan said: “We have full programmes available at the museum and online. Admission of £4.50 will include hot drinks and light bites, provided by local food suppliers.”
