Local residents, businesses and users of the A595 are being asked to have their say on proposals to improve the A595 at Grizebeck.
Cumbria County Council is launching a consultation on Friday 19 October to seek people’s views on the two potential route options. A range of opportunities are being provided for people to find out more and share their views. Public consultation drop-in events will be held at Grizebeck Village Hall on:
- Friday 19 October, between 12 noon and 6pm.
- Wednesday 7 November, between 3pm and 7pm.
The consultation will close on Friday 16 November 2018.

The county council is undertaking a transport study and has considered a number of options for a road improvement scheme. Two possible route options have been identified (see the attached plan):
- Red route option – road widening with a bypass of Grizebeck
- Blue route option – full bypass to the east of farm at Dove Ford
The A595 Grizebeck improvement is one of the first five road network schemes to start in development for future consideration for the government’s new Major Road Network fund.
Cumbria County Council is working with government to secure funding for this essential road improvement scheme. The county council believes a new bypass on this key road will bring a number of benefits, including:
- Supporting economic growth in Cumbria by improving journey times on the A595
- Improving the A595 to make it suitable for freight traffic accessing existing and proposed major developments
- Improving resilience and journey time reliability, particularly at times when the road is used as a diversion route if the A590 is closed between Dalton and Greenodd
- Improving road safety by reducing the number and severity of collisions
Feedback from the consultation will be used alongside technical study work to choose a preferred option. The county council will then produce a business case for the preferred option to demonstrate why the scheme is needed and the benefits it will bring – helping to secure the government funding needed to deliver the scheme.
Cllr Keith Little, Cumbria County Council Cabinet member for Highways and Transport, said: “The A595 Grizebeck bypass is a really important scheme for Cumbria which will not only improve journey times and help boost the county’s economy but also create a safer and more resilient road between Barrow and West Cumbria. The county council has identified two possible routes for a bypass and we are now launching a public consultation. I’d strongly encourage people to take the time to get involved, read the consultation document and attend the events – it’s important that local people have their say, so we can develop the best possible scheme.”
