Longtown landmarks depicted in mosaic to celebrate town’s history

A colourful mosaic with poppies to honour Longtown’s war heroes has been designed by the town’s schoolchildren.

The intricate art piece is on display in Lochinvar Close, and depicts local landmarks such as the medieval Arthuret Church and Longtown Bridge, as well as poppies to remember Longtown’s War Memorial and a rainbow from a school logo.

Youngsters from Longtown Primary School and William Howard School were involved in designing, planning and making the mosaic. The local knit and natter group knitted items that surround the art piece, and the frame surrounding the mosaic was donated by Slawek Wisniewski from Cherry Tree Furniture.

The community project was made possible thanks to £500 donation from housing association Riverside to celebrate the opening of 13 new homes to rent in nearby Moorlands Park.

Jamie Hendry, Riverside’s Regional Projects Officer said: “Riverside is committed to building new homes such as Moorlands Park to ensure the housing needs in the area are met. We are also committed to investing in our neighbourhoods, so this was a wonderful opportunity for us to contribute to this community project. It is brilliant to see schoolchildren and local people come together to create this piece of art and show everyone that residents’ are proud of Longtown.”
