Works planned to repair A590 gas leak

There will be temporary traffic lights during the night on A590 between Ulverston and Barrow while a gas leak is repaired.

Kevin Hegarty, a spokesman for gas distribution network Cadent, which manages the gas mains pipes under the roads of south Cumbria, said: “We have found a leak on the gas main that sits underneath the A590 between Ulverston and Barrow.

“Most important thing first: everything is under control, there is no risk to anyone’s safety, and we are monitoring gas readings regularly. But this needs fixing to stop it getting any worse.

“So, we have agreed with Highways England that we will work this evening – between 8pm and around 10.30pm, near Swarthmoor – to identify the source of the leak and plan the repair. We’ll ensure the A590 stays open, with traffic lights managing the flow of vehicles around our work area.

“These lights will be removed once this investigative work is done, tonight. We will then liaise with Highways England to agree how we’ll manage and time the work to repair the pipe. We have already indicated that we can do this over the Christmas period, while the roads are likely to be less busy.

“We hope people understand this is necessary and essential work, to ensure everyone’s safety and maintain a reliable gas supply for your central heating systems this winter.”
