Executive to consider changes to council tax for empty home owners

Allerdale Borough Council’s Executive members will consider proposals to increase the council tax premium for owners of empty homes at its next meeting on 16 January 2018.

Currently empty property owners pay a 50% premium on their council tax, however the new recommended proposals will act as a further incentive to bring them back into use.

The proposals to be considered are:

  • Introduce a premium of 100% for properties that have been empty for at least two years with effect from 1 April 2019
  • Introduce a premium of 200% for properties that have been empty for at least five years with effect from 1 April 2020
  • Introduce a premium of 300% for properties that have been empty for at least ten years with effect from 1 April 2021

The number of long-term empty homes in Allerdale has increased annually since 2013 when there was 302, compared to the current figure of 357.  One of the council’s key priorities is to take action on derelict and empty properties to ensure residents have the housing they need as well as make the borough an attractive and welcoming place for residents and visitors.

The council may be able to help get an empty property back into use. Owners should contact the housing team for more details on 0303 123 1702.
