Prospective candidates and agents for this May’s Local Elections are being given the chance to find out more about the election process.

Carlisle City Council is offering potential candidates and agents the chance to meet up with the Returning Officer Jason Gooding and the City Council’s Electoral Registration Officer before the close of nomination deadline on Wednesday 3 April 2019.

A briefing on the Local Election process will be held at 4pm on Tuesday 5 March in the Civic Centre. To find out more, contact Carlisle City Council on 01228 817555.

Following a boundary review, all current Carlisle City Council wards will change at the next election. The Boundary Commission’s final recommendations were that Carlisle should be represented by 39 city councillors in the future: thirteen fewer than the current arrangement. The recommendations also proposed that those councillors should represent 13 three-councillor wards. These recommendations have now been implemented by Parliament; The Carlisle (Electoral Changes) Order 2019 is now in force.

The new electoral arrangements to come into force at the Carlisle City Council elections in 2019. Elections will be held in the following 13 wards on Thursday 2 May.

Belah & Kingmoor; Botcherby & Harraby North; Brampton & Fellside; Cathedral & Castle; Currock & Upperby; Dalston & Burgh; Denton Holme & Morton South; Harraby South & Parklands; Longtown & the Border; Newtown & Morton North; Sandsfield & Morton West; Stanwix & Houghton; and Wetheral & Corby.

To qualify as a candidate for the Local Elections, you must:

  • Be at least 18 years old;
  • Be a British, qualifying Commonwealth, or Irish citizen or a citizen from a member EU state;
  • Have a connection with the Carlisle area – such as by being a registered elector or occupying land or property in the City Council area; and
  • Not being disqualified by being subject to a Bankruptcy order, holding a politically restricted post, being sentenced to a term of imprisonment of three months or more without the option of paying a fine during the last five years or other disqualifiers.

The official Notice of Election for the City Council elections will be published on Friday, 15 March 2019. Candidates have until 4pm on Wednesday 3 April 2019 to submit their nominations. Nomination packs are available from Electoral Services, Civic Centre, Carlisle or by telephoning 01228 817555.
