As Easter weekend approaches, the Lake District National Park is encouraging people to think green about travelling to and around the Park.
2019 is the Government’s Year of Green Action (YoGA), which aims to connect people with nature and encourage everyone in the UK to take positive actions to play their part in improving the environment. Travelling sustainably is a great first step.
The Lake District welcomed 19 million visitors last year and if more people chose to travel in an environmentally friendly way it would help look after the future of this special national park and UNESCO World Heritage Site. The National Park’s long term target is to reduce the amount of visitors who currently arrive by car from 83 per cent to 64 per cent by 2040.
Emma Moody, the Lake District National Park’s Lead Strategy Adviser for Recreation and Sustainable Transport, says: “This Year of Green Action gives us a real opportunity to make better travel choices. We’re always looking at new ways to ensure that people can enjoy their visit to the Lake District whilst being mindful of the impact this is having on the environment. There are many different ways to travel around the Lake District and most of them are great fun too.
“Currently there’s a fantastic value, park and explore ticket option which includes all day parking at participating car parks and an all-day bus ticket for £18 per family.”

It’s an easy and cost effective way to travel around the Lake District whilst sitting back and enjoying the views from a bus instead of the car. In the central Lakes all the main attractions are easily and conveniently reached by bus, with up to four buses per hour between Bowness, Windermere, Brockhole, Ambleside and Grasmere. There is even an open top service, which is always a hit with the whole family.
Throughout the Lakes, the summer timetable for boats is now underway meaning it’s easier than ever to travel by a variety of styles of boats on Windermere, Coniston, Derwentwater or Ullswater.
As the weather gets a bit warmer, it’s the ideal time to have a look at the many fantastic cycling and walking opportunities the Lake District has to offer and there’s never been a better time to visit than during National Parks Fortnight which runs from April 2 – 21.
