At the end of next week, crowds of four-legged pets and their owners will be coming together to take part in and be counted towards ‘The Great Global Greyhound Walk’ held at Sizergh Castle.

The ‘Great Global Greyhound Walk’ is an annual walk and one of many taking place across the world on Sunday 9th June to celebrate greyhounds and other sighthound breeds. The event started ten years ago when volunteers decided to bring together owners from across the UK to raise the profile of rescued and retired (ex-racing) greyhounds along with other sighthounds as pets. Over the years the walks have grown and annual walks now take place as far afield as New Zealand, USA, Europe, and Abu Dhabi.

The charity Greyhound Trust South Lakes has organised the walk at Sizergh which is open to owners of any greyhounds and sighthounds living or visiting the area. In 2018, 37 dogs took part in the walk at Sizergh and the branch volunteers are hoping to beat that number with two walks to choose from this year; a short route of approximately 45 minutes or a longer walk taking 1.5 hours.

Emily Dixon, volunteer and monthly walk co-ordinator at the branch said, “This is the third time we’ve run The Great Global Greyhound Walk at Sizergh and we’re hoping for a big turnout of local greyhounds and other sighthounds. We’d really love as many owners as possible to come, even if you just have an interest in these dogs or are thinking of adopting one – the idea of the walk is to celebrate what great pets greyhounds make, meet like-minded people and to share ideas and tips on greyhound ownership.”

Alastair Law, Operations Manager at Sizergh Castle said, “It’s great to see an event like this going on at Sizergh – dogs are welcome in our estate and there are a number of long and short walks to choose from, including to Helsington Barrows, Sizergh Fell, Park End Moss and Brigsteer Woods. There’s a free map at reception and the café and shop are also dog friendly.”

The Great Global Greyhound Walk will take place on Sunday, 9th June at 11am. To take part, just turn up on the day, meet by the café at Sizergh in the car park at 10.45am (Sizergh is approximately 4 miles south of Kendal, postcode LA8 8DZ).

The Greyhound Trust South Lakes runs monthly walks on the second Sunday of each month throughout the year across a number of locations in the South Lakes area. For more information contact Greyhound Trust South Lakes on 015395 52394 or visit their website www.greyhoundtrustsouthlakes.org.uk
