Carlisle man given night-time curfew for resisting police

Carlisle Crown Court

A MAN who struggled with police as they called at his Carlisle home has been sentenced by a judge.

Benjamin Joshua Hetherington was approaching the end of a suspended prison term imposed for previous offending when officers went to his Diggle Road address in the city on April 8.

Hetherington, 22, refused to allow them entry. Upon being placed under arrest, Hetherington tried to shut the door and a PC’s hand became trapped. He then became aggressive and pulled away as attempts were made to apply handcuffs.

Hetherington later admitted resisting police, and was sentenced at Carlisle Crown Court today (MON).
Judge James Adkin heard Hetherington had completed unpaid work, rehabilitation and a curfew imposed as part of the previous punishment.

After hearing mitigation – and that Hetherington was embarking upon an apprenticeship – Judge Adkin concluded it would be unjust to activate the suspended prison term. For the latest offences he received a two-month night-time curfew.
