COPELAND Council is to celebrate Love Parks week with a host of events in Castle Park, Whitehaven.

Love Parks Week runs from Friday July 12 until Tuesday July 22 and aims to encourage people to get out and enjoy their local parks.

The council’s plans include:

  • A litter pick on Friday July 12 from x10am until noon – the public are invited to join council staff in sprucing up Castle Park.
  • A family ‘bumble bee’ scavenger hunt on Saturday July 13 starting at the town’s Saturday market and including Castle Park.
  • A mile-long health walk around the park by council staff and councillors on Monday July 15, between noon and 2pm. The Calderwood House coffee van will also be there.
  • On Thursday July 18,  a Let’s Get Buzzy walk with the Wildlife Trust from 1pm until 3pm. Everyone’s welcome to learn how to identify and record pollinators and make the park better for our buzzy friends.
  • On Saturday July 20 there will be another one-mile walk, this time for families and the wider public to enjoy the park. There will also be chance to meet our recycling mascot, Edna the Recyclephant, find out more about recycling, grab a free gift and do some children’s activities. The Calderwood House coffee van will also be there.
  •  On Monday July 22 we will host a visit from Phoenix Youth Group, during which the teenagers will find out what’s involved in working for the council’s Open Spaces department.

Copeland’s Elected Mayor, Mike Starkie, said: “We wanted to take this opportunity to celebrate the parks we manage. Castle park is a great town centre location for family events, with a fantastic play area. We hope this gives people a taste of what an attractive environment it can be.

“We have also been working with the police to lessen the incidence there of anti-social behaviour, and have renewed Public Space Protection Orders. I’d encourage everyone to come to one of these events, or simply drop into their local park and enjoy it.”

The Love Parks campaign is run by the Keep Britain Tidy group and more information can be found here.
