Lake District team launch new ultra distance challenge open to walkers and runners

Events Director Davy Newell has launched a brand new trail race around Windermere and surrounds. THE LAP is a 45mi off road circuit of England’s largest and most iconic lake.

Davy said, “THE LAP will make a great introduction to longer races or a fast, low level option for experienced competitors.”

Competitors will have 24 hours to circumnavigate the lake, taking in classic viewpoints and some less well travelled paths and trails.

The inaugural LAP will take place at 6am Saturday 7th September 2019 from the YMCA Lakeside, five minutes from Newby Bridge. Entries are still available but will be capped at 300 to reduce the ecological impact and congestion.

“A journey around the beating heart of The Lake District.” – THE LAP

Each year the route will alternate direction to ensure a different experience every time.

Davy explains how THE LAP came about: “It all started with an old map filled with crossings outs and notes, from this, the route was born. We set out to create the most beautiful race we could on trails we love. We didn’t care about distance or ascent, we just wanted a route we would want to do ourselves…and I think we’ve achieved that.”

Having organised triathlons and trail races plus coordinating the Seven Marathons In Seven Days for charity, Davy took a step back from sporting events to concentrate on other projects and starting a family but since finding that map, together with friend and colleague James Gray, he has launched a new challenge for local runners and walkers that is also already attracting international attention.

“Since our launch at the start of April, we have seen a really great reaction from the long distance community and we’ve had sign ups everyday which is really encouraging.” – James, THE LAP

Describing the route, Davy explained, “This is a low level route and so is an ideal introduction to off road distance running and also means we can go ahead, whatever the weather, which here in Cumbria means a lot!”

Local brewery, Bowness Bay Brewing are offering an unprecedented £400 cash prize for the first Woman and first Man over the line. Whilst Lakes-based nutrition specialists Mountain Fuel will be keeping competitors going by supporting the 5 fully-stocked feed stations around the route. THE LAP has also attracted support from Tyrolean Trail Running and Mountain Sports brand Dynafit, bringing a little European flair to this corner of The Lakes.
