Governors, staff and students at St Benedict’s School in Whitehaven, have welcomed Bishop Paul Swarbrick, and guests from associated parishes and schools, to the Blessing of the new building.

On Friday 13th September 2019, Bishop Paul led a service in the new Theatre to celebrate the Blessing of the new St Benedict’s School building on Campus Whitehaven. The event was followed by a small reception for the Bishop and guests.

Bishop Paul met some students, governors and staff and unveiled a commemorative plaque.

Addressing guests in the new Theatre

Mrs Emma Jackson, Headteacher at St Benedict’s said of the visit: “We were honoured that Bishop Paul Swarbrick blessed our new building on Friday 13th September. Our Year 11 and Year 13 students attended a liturgy of the word, where Bishop Paul blessed the building.”

“He then toured the school and met with various students and staff. We are delighted to have such a modern and vibrant building. Finally Bishop Paul visited our chapel where staff, students and invited guests prayed together. It was a very moving and spiritual occasion.”

The original school building, on Red Lonning, was opened and Blessed by Bishop Brewer in April 1971 but has been recently demolished. The new building is now occupied and the staff and students have settled in well.
