One of the world’s largest ferry operators is to support a podcast set up to highlight the often-unseen work of the maritime industry.

Stena Line is sponsoring the second series of The Full Ahead Podcast which was launched by former shipping chief executive Alistair Eagles and journalist and broadcaster Nigel Thompson.

The first series included five episodes recorded at the Shipping Ferry Summit in Malmo which included interviews with the CEOs of shipping firms across Europe. Other guests included the British Ports Association, a marine lawyer and the volunteers who keep one of the remaining steam powered tugs afloat.

“When we began the podcast, we thought there was a real opportunity to highlight the work of people employed in this vital sector who are often overlooked,” Alistair said. “Little did we know that maritime matters would become daily news and we’ve been overwhelmed by the messages and comments from listeners from all over the world.”

With recruitment a continuing issue across the industry, the podcast has sought to dispel myths about life at sea as well as opportunities ashore, and contributors have already come from all walks of life.

“Our very first guest was someone who knew he wanted to be part of the industry from an early age and he really set the bar when it came to capturing the enthusiasm and drive that we found common among all our guests so far,” Nigel said. “As well as amazing personal stories, innovation is taking place in all areas of the industry and we’ve been privileged to see it at first hand too.”

A recent episode was recorded aboard Stena’s New Max RoRo ship, the innovative Stena Connecta which has two 28×4 metre Norsepower Rotor Sails installed.

From battery powered ships to ways AI is now welcoming passengers aboard, the podcast has already charted how the industry is developing at a rapid rate.

“We’re delighted to be able to offer support to a podcast that has quickly established itself as a source of stories and insight into the maritime world,” said Shirley Oguz, Stena Line’s PR & communication manager for UK & Ireland. “As a company that has a proud history and is at the forefront of innovation across Europe, we’re looking forward to helping amplify the industry through The Full Ahead Podcast over the coming months.”

The podcast has already attracted listeners in 69 countries and the next series is set to highlight innovations that are an increasing part of the maritime industry.

“The sponsorship means we can extend our range to cover even more stories and bring video into the mix too – all of which will help spread the word about this fascinating and fast-changing industry,” Alistair said.

The Full Ahead Podcast can be heard on Spotify and Apple.
