A CARLISLE man who verbally abused and assaulted a police officer has been given a six-month jail term.
Glenn Shields, 27, and another man were asked to stop by three PCs on duty in the Upperby area of the city on August 2.
But Shields tried to run away and when one officer, PC Jamie Minnett, tried to take hold and arrest him, he yelled abuse and swung punches, which missed.
As PC Minnett then took out his handcuffs, Shields grabbed at his face, tried to bite his bicep, shouted various expletives and vowed: “I will snap your neck.”
Shields was eventually detained after incapacitant spray was used, Carlisle Crown Court heard. The officer attended hospital after suffering scratches to his neck, face, arms and hands.
Shields, of Cant Crescent, admitted assaulting an emergency worker during what his own barrister conceded was a “nasty and unpleasant incident”.
He was jailed by Judge Nicholas Barker, who told Shields: “Police officers like PC Minnett are not there to be attacked by the likes of you. They have a job to do, and that is to enforce the law and to keep the rest of us safe.”
