Cyber security is rarely out of the headlines.
Whether it’s use of personal data, identity theft, abuse on social media or banking fraud, it’s understandable that many people have concerns about staying safe online.
To address these issues and offer practical advice and guidance, four free community training sessions are being offered in south Cumbria next week.
The training is being funded by Cumbria’s Police and Crime Commissioner, and will be delivered by the South Cumbria Community Safety Partnership (CSP) – made up of South Lakeland District Council, Cumbria County Council, the police and fire services and voluntary organisations – which works to help tackle issues around crime and disorder and promotes community safety.
The online safety training is aimed at individuals and businesses and is particularly suitable for community group representatives who can then pass the information on through their organisations.
The sessions will be led by Get Safe Online, the UK’s leading source of unbiased, factual and easy-to-understand information on online safety.
Sessions will be held on Wednesday, 6 November, at the following locations:
- Ambleside, Ambleside Library – 10am to 11.30am
- Ulverston, Ulverston Library – 1.30pm to 3pm
Two sessions also take place on Thursday, 7 November, at:
- Barrow, Barrow Library – 11am to 12.30pm
- Grange, Grange Library – 2.30pm to 4pm
The training will cover cyber security topics around online shopping, online finance, social media, keeping children safe online and advice for small businesses and there will be plenty of opportunities to ask questions and seek further advice.

“The internet offers so many possibilities for all of us but it is important that we take simple steps to keep ourselves safe from cyber-criminals.
“The online world can be a tremendous force for good but unfortunately, there are people out there who seek to exploit it to the disadvantage of others.
“Cyber-crime is a key threat to individuals, businesses and our communities alike which is why I funded ‘Get Safe Online’ who are specialists in the field of cyber security, to work alongside our Community Safety Partnership team.”
