M6 in Lancashire re-opens after bridge demolition

Nan’s Nook footbridge has now been removed following this weekend’s demolition

The M6 in Lancashire has re-opened after it was closed to allow a bridge to be demolished safely as part of a planned project.

The motorway was closed in both directions from 9pm on Friday night (10 January) to allow Nan’s Nook footbridge – between junction 32 at Broughton Interchange and junction 33 at Galgate – to be demolished.

Highways England had until 5am on Monday (13 January) to remove the bridge but the work was completed early and both carriageways of the motorway were re-opened by 11pm on Saturday (11 January).

Highways England project manager Chris Riley said: “We dismantled the bridge in situ and made such good progress removing all the rubble and clearing the carriageways that we were able to re-open the motorway early. This is testament to the hard work of the team and all the contractors working on this demolition project.

“We’d like to thank motorway users as well as everyone living along the A6 diversion route for their support and patience during the closure.”
