An annual Duck Races in Grasmere has raised £598 for charity.
Local community and visitors come together for a good cause. The Wordsworth Hotel & Spa organise the races every year, which sees duck racers releasing 200 yellow rubber ducks downstream on the River Rothay at Grasmere. There was also a ‘guess the weight of the cake competition’ as part of the fundraising event.
This year the events took place on Boxing Day and New Year’s Eve raising £598 which has been donated to St.John’s Hospice. The prizes for the events were kindly donated by local suppliers including Chocolate Cottage, Grasmere Gingerbread, McClures, Grasmere Garden Centre, Hawkshead Brewery, Ytsara, Watermill Brewery, Matthew Clark Lakeland Vintners as well as the Wordsworth Hotel & Spa.
Mark Wenlock St John’s Hospice Community Fundraiser said: “It’s community events like this that not only bring people together for a bit of fun, but raise money to fund the essential work we do providing care for people with life shortening conditions and their families. We can’t do this without events like this and appreciate the generosity of the Grasmere community.”

Catalin Oanea General Manager Wordsworth Hotel & Spa said: “Most of our returning resident guests take part and a lot of the locals and visitors to the area pop in and buy a duck to get involved too. It feels good to give back, particularly during the festive period which for many can be a difficult time of year.”
