A SUSPECT “deliberately coughed at police officers upon arrest”, it was alleged.

Eden Police reported on social media on Friday that they had detained a man after visiting an address in Brough, near Kirkby Stephen, following an earlier incident the previous night.

That incident was reported to have involved colleagues from Lancashire, prompting a response from Cumbria Constabulary which included members of the roads policing unit and dog section.

“Suspect deliberately coughed at police upon arrest,” stated the Eden Police post on Twitter. “It saddens me having to write this, we are all humans. Simply shouldn’t happen.”

A Cumbria police spokesman has said that a 46-year-old man from Brough had been charged with an alleged common assault on an emergency worker.

He is due to appear at North and West Cumbria Magistrates’ Court in Carlisle on June 26.
