Overnight traffic measures and bus stop suspensions will be in place on a busy Carlisle route as a major drainage project gets under way next month.
Cumberland Council is carrying out structural repairs to the Dow Beck (Caldewgate) Culvert.
The culvert transfers water beneath the dual carriageway and plays an important role in the city’s drainage infrastructure.
The authority said the scheme would strengthen the structure and ensure it remained safe and reliable, reducing the need for future weight restrictions.
Metcalfe Plant Hire Ltd has been appointed to carry out the specialist repairs, resurfacing and utility improvements.
Before the main project begins, United Utilities will carry out preparatory work to install equipment needed to isolate a nearby water main.
This work is due to start during the week commencing Monday July 27 and is expected to take around five days.
The main phase of the project is scheduled to begin on Monday August 3 and is expected to last for around four weeks, with completion anticipated in early September 2026.
To allow the construction to be carried out safely, traffic management will be required around Bridge Street, Bridge Lane and the Caldewgate junction.
The majority of the work will take place overnight from 8pm to 6am to help reduce disruption, although traffic management will remain in place during the day.
The McVitie’s and Sainsbury’s westbound bus stops will be suspended for the duration of the project.
A temporary bus stop will be introduced on Bridge Street, just west of the suspended Sainsbury’s stop and opposite Milbourne Street.
Passengers who normally use the McVitie’s stop are advised to use the Silloth Street stop on Wigton Road or the Port Road Garage stop on Newtown Road.
A public drop-in event will be held for people to find out more about the scheme, understand the planned traffic management and speak directly with the project team.
The event will take place on Monday July 20 between 5pm and 7pm at the iCan Wellbeing Group CIO in Unit 18 of The Maltings on Bridge Street.
No parking is available at the venue, but public parking is available nearby at Paddy’s Market and Castle Car Park.
The nearest active bus stop is next to Sainsbury’s, a short walk from the venue.
