The union flag at the Town Hall in Workington has been raised as a mark of respect for the 75th anniversary of VE Day.
The flag was raised by the Mayor of Workington, Cllr Janet King, in a simple ceremony. Under normal circumstances, the flag-raising would be open for the public to attend, but the event was held privately to meet current social distancing guidelines. Cllr Janet King commented;
“It’s important to mark the anniversary of VE Day and to take the time to recognise the sacrifices of the Second World War generation. As we cannot currently gather as a community, the raising of the flag acts as a simple gesture of respect”.
The Town Council confirmed it will continue with its plans to erect a statue in Vulcan Park in honour of the VE Day anniversary. Planning and construction have been delayed but will continue once restrictions are lifted.
