£80k investment transforms Windermere station car park

Northern’s gateway to the Lake District has been revamped thanks to resurfacing work at Windermere station.

The £80,000 joint project from Northern and Network Rail has transformed the entrance road and car park, ready to welcome passengers back when lockdown restrictions are eased.

The work, which was funded by Network Rail, was carried out safely during the coronavirus pandemic, with TMT, the contractors, working carefully in line with government guidelines to deliver this essential improvement.

In addition to resurfacing work, the layout of the car park has been changed to improve safety for pedestrians and drivers. The redesign ensures that pedestrian areas are clearly marked, and the one-way system has been made significantly clearer.

The work started in mid-April and was completed on in early May.

Chris Jackson, Regional Director at Northern, said: “Windermere is a popular station for people visiting the town and those exploring the Lake District. The improvements will make a huge difference to our customers and others who also use the car park. I’d like to thank everyone involved for completing the work safely during this difficult time, which has meant an added layer of complexity.”

Alex Lewis, Asset Engineer at Network Rail, added: “This work will really improve the experience of passengers travelling to and from Windermere.

“A popular tourist spot, the new surfacing work will give the right impression to people coming to see the beauty of the Lake District.”
