THREE men arrested on suspicion of arson after a massive fire engulfed and destroyed a derelict Workington nightclub have been released on bail, police confirmed this afternoon (TUES).

Emergency services responded to reports of a large fire, at the former Fusion nightspot premises on Ladies Walk, at around 11pm on Saturday. A male had to be rescued and neighbouring properties were evacuated as a host of fire crews battled to contain the blaze.

As an investigation into the cause of the fire got under way, police announced on Sunday afternoon that three men – two from Workington, aged 28 and 20, and a 21-year-old from Whitehaven – had been arrested on suspicion of arson. All three were initially held in custody for questioning.

A Cumbria police spokesman said today: “They have since been released on bail.”

The spokesman added that Cumbria Constabulary was continuing to work alongside Cumbria Fire and Rescue Service during the investigation.

Anyone with information relating to the incident has been asked to contact Cumbria police on 101 and ask to speak to officer from the West Cumbria crime and safeguarding team.

Alternatively people can contact Crimestoppers, anonymously, on 0800 555 111.
