Volunteers at Penrith’s Salvation Army, led by Major Alan & Major Carole Donaldson (Corps Ministers), received a welcome donation of £1,242.65 from local author, Catherine Watson on Friday.
Catherine has been working in partnership with Morrison’s and their Degree Apprentice, Imogen Dodd, to give away hundreds of ‘Felix the Fast Tractor’ books in the local store. During the last four weeks the money donated has reached an impressive total and will certainly be put to good use by The Salvation Army who are helping to feed many local residents during these challenging times.
Major Alan Donaldson said: “Catherine rang last week to say she’d been giving books away at Morrison’s and that she’d like to donate the money raised to help the local community. We were pleased and grateful, but fairly shocked when she said how much money had actually been collected so far. It’s a large amount of money in support of our ministry as we, along with our incredible volunteer team, including Community Support Worker Heather, provide vital, practical support within our community.”
Catherine added: “It’s been amazing to see how many books have been taken and how much money has been raised. Imogen and the staff at Morrison’s have been great to work with and I know they already give groceries to the local church and help with charitable work. In addition, Andrea Mills, who is Morrison’s local charity champion, helps The Salvation Army two days per week. I was shown around the Hunter Lane Church premises when I dropped the money off and it’s amazing to see how much food they have there and the amazing effort they go to in keeping our communities going.”
The books are still available in Morrison’s and any further donations will be given to The Salvation Army Church.
