AN elderly doctor accused of causing a 75-year-old pedestrian’s death by careless driving on the A69 in North Cumbria has appeared in court.
The charge faced by 74-year-old Dr Samin Ahmed Khan arises of out of a collision which is said to have occurred at Warwick-on-Eden at around 7-30pm on April 27 last year.
It alleges that Dr Khan caused the death of pensioner Robert Wilson, who died on April 29, 2019 – two days after the incident – by driving a Mercedes E220 without due care and attention.
Dr Khan appeared over a Skype link when the case came before District Judge Gerald Chalk at North and West Cumbria Magistrates’ Court in Carlisle today (THURS).
During a hearing lasting less than five minutes, bespectacled Dr Khan – wearing a blue shirt – confirmed his name, date of birth, his address of Scaleby Hill, Carlisle, his nationality, and indicated he was not entering any plea at this stage.
His case was committed to Carlisle Crown Court, where he is due to appear in front of a judge on August 4 for a plea and trial preparation hearing.
In the meantime, Dr Khan – who was represented by solicitor Tom Gent – was granted unconditional bail by District Judge Chalk.
Police said at the time a collision between a pedestrian and a car had occurred at the junction of the Old Chapel Road at Warwick Bridge.
