Silloth Market to return following coronavirus suspension

Silloth town centre

The open-air market in Silloth town centre will return next Thursday (July 23) for the first time since the coronavirus lockdown.

The market – along with its counterparts in Wigton, Workington and Keswick – was suspended in March in line with government guidance.

Now the restrictions have been eased, the markets in Workington, Keswick and Wigton successfully resumed last month with measures in place to keep staff, traders and members of the public safe.

When Silloth Market resumes a number of safety measures will also be introduced, meaning regular customer may notice some changes. These include:

  • Hand-washing/hand sanitiser units will be in place across the market site while traders will also be required to provide their own hand-washing facilities
  • Extra cleaning and disinfecting of objects and surfaces that are touched regularly
  • Signage reminding members of the public to adhere to social distancing guidelines and encouraging frequent hand-washing will be on show
  • The market running at a reduced capacity to allow people to move around more freely

Allerdale Borough Council took the management of markets in the district in-house from June 1, 2020 and the decision to bring markets back has been done in consultation with town councils, traders and local councillors.

The Council asks that anyone attending any of its market please adhere to the relevant social distancing guidelines.
