Paul Sinha, star of television’s The Chase, is to host a giant quiz at this year’s Taste Cumbria weekend in Cockermouth.

The GP-turned-comedian, who is famed as a professional TV quizzer and also regularly appears on the likes of Radio 4’s Just a Minute and The News Quiz, won the British Quizzing Champion title in 2019 and, in 2018, was ranked 11th in the World Quizzing Championships. As a club comedian, he has played every major comedy club in the UK, performed in 18 other countries across the globe, and been four times nominated for Best Club Comedian at the Chortle Awards, winning in 2014.

Known as ‘The Sinnerman’ on The Chase, Paul’s other nicknames include ‘Sarcasm in a Suit’ and ‘The Smiling Assassin’ thanks to his TV persona.

Speaking about his trip to Cumbria, he said: “I haven’t been this way since a weekend visit in 1996. I’m very excited to be making a long overdue return and hope that people will be willing to put their thinking caps on for a wide-ranging and fun quiz written and hosted by me.”

Paul Sinha’s Big Quiz takes place from 1.30pm on Sunday 27 September in the Taste Cumbria Marquee on Cockermouth’s Memorial Gardens car park. Tickets are on sale now and cost £12.50 each. If people wish to attend as part of a group, they must purchase all their tickets together and remain seated in that ‘bubble’ for the duration of the event, other than visiting toilet facilities. Table service will be available for food and drink.

The 2020 Taste Cumbria food festival will happen in Cockermouth on Saturday 26 and Sunday 27 September.

Mike Johnson, deputy leader and Executive member for economic growth, community development and placemaking:

“Taste Cumbria is more than just a food festival, it’s renowned for having top quality entertainment too. Although this year’s event will be smaller than usual there’ll still be some great acts on offer.”

There will be a producer’s market on Main Street with 40 stalls strategically placed to allow plenty of social distancing. As well as Paul’s Big Quiz, there will be a weekend of live entertainment and the chance to order hot food via table service. In Market Place, there will be more food and drink stalls and a picnic area, hosted by Cockermouth businesses. Elsewhere in town, there will be children’s activities and music.

Stallholders will trade until 7pm to spread out the time people can visit and the town’s shops will be encouraged to stay open to give everyone more space to browse.
