A celebration of international comics in lights and sound

The annual Lakes International Comic Art Festival (LICAF) presents ILLUMINOS –  a celebration of comics in lights and sound on October 1st and 2nd 8 – 9:30pm.

The free, outdoor event will bring some of the world’s greatest comic artists together in an animated, lighting spectacle that will be projected on the full frontage of Kendal.

This year, the festival will be predominantly a virtual event – LICAF LIVE – with events, talks, comic challenges and more all taking place online, but the festival still wanted to bring something exceptional to the streets of Kendal to mark the occasion.

LICAF has working with one of the leaders in the field of digital mapping and performance projection on this special event. The Ramsbottom-based company, also called Illuminos, have previously worked on projects including the Capital of Culture closing ceremony, a lighting transformation of the Wales Millennium Centre and the Manchester International Festival.

The Kendal event will celebrate the unique contribution of LICAF and Kendal to comic art and includes newly commissioned material from comic creatives like Dave Gibbons (Watchmen) Michael Lark (Lazurus, Batman, Captain America), Bill Morrison (The Simpsons) and Lucy Sullivan (Barking).

Julie Tait, Festival Director said: “We are so excited to be bringing such a spectacular visual feast to the streets of Kendal. This is a new and thrilling way to experience comic art and a wonderful way to kick-start LICAF Live!”

The Festival would like to emphasise the importance of enjoying Iluminos whist observing social distancing guidance. The projection spectacular runs for ten minutes and will then be repeated. Visitors can therefore arrive at any time between 8pm and 9:15pm and will be able to see the full show. Booking is not required. The event is outside and shelter is not provided, please dress for the weather!
