Cumbria’s Police and Crime Commissioner, Peter McCall’s COVID-19 Community Recovery fund has awarded £43,797.27 overall to the successful applicants in September.
The fund aims to help voluntary groups and charities cope with the financial impact of COVID-19, offering immediate support to organisations that are helping individuals, families and communities to recover and rebuild since lockdown restrictions started to ease.
Speaking on the fund, Peter McCall, said: “This fund really is all about helping community groups and charities stay afloat during COVID-19.
“Many of these groups and charities are doing essential work at the heart of our local communities, work which has possibly never been more important and needed than in these challenging times, which is why it is so important that we do what we can to help and support them.
“Over the last few months, we have given £186,467 to groups right across the county and I hope that this funding will help them to continue their essential work.
“Successful recipients in the September rounds of applicants include amongst several others groups like:
“Appleby Deanery, a youth group in Tebay which supports young people between the ages of 10 and 16 who have been awarded £1,297.41.
“The club supports around 35 children with sport and outdoor activities with the aim to prevent social isolation, anxiety and reduce anti-social behaviour.
“Growing Well, a mental health charity based on a farm near Kendal have been awarded £5,000.
“The charity works with 100 people per year with their recovery from mental illness through supported work on the farm and offer accredited horticultural training and courses that address long term mental health.
“Over in the west of the county, Autism Support Allerdale and Copeland received £4557 to support and provide 800 members with access to workshops around behaviour, sleep patterns and self-harming which will be offered to schools.
“The project will provide vital support and information to parents, carers and professionals to help young people with autism.
“These types of projects are so important and are so much needed in Cumbria.
“So many volunteers give up their time to help others in need and this is why I launched this recovery fund – to support local groups through a very challenging time and also to say thank you for all their selfless work and outstanding commitment.
