A search is underway to find a volunteer to carry out a unique role on behalf of communities across the borough.
Barrow Borough Council is looking for an Independent Person and a substitute Independent Person, to promote and maintain high standards of conduct among the authority’s elected councillors as well as members of the borough’s town and parish councils.
The candidate would be appointed for either a two or a four-year term, and although it is not salaried, the council will pay reasonable travel and subsistence incurred in the role.
Ann Thomson, the leader of Barrow Borough Council, said the role was vital to the authority and also the communities it serves.
“As a council it’s essential our high standards are maintained on behalf of residents and the whole borough.
“The Independent Person plays a key part in this and we would like to hear from anyone who feels the role might be of interest.
“It’s a unique and very interesting position. It’s also an impartial and independent role.”
Under the Localism Act 2011, all local authorities must appoint an Independent Person.
They would be consulted in the event of an allegation or a complaint about the conduct of an elected member, or a member of a parish council in the borough.
After hearing the evidence available, they would provide an objective view of the situation, often making a recommendation as to whether or not a complaint should be investigated more fully.
The ideal candidate is someone who is able to act objectively, impartially and in confidence to come to a reasoned judgement.
Councillor Thomson added: “This is a great role for someone with an interest in local government who is looking for a way to serve the community, to put something back.
“As a council, we’re absolutely committed to maintaining the highest of standards in all aspects of our work. The Independent Person has an important part to play in this – please get in touch to find out more.”
Those interested should contact the council as soon as possible.
