Organisers of Ambleside Sports are working behind the scenes to allow the event to go ahead this year.
The committee said while detailed plans cannot be made due to the coronavirus pandemic, it was aiming for the event date of Thursday July 29.
The biggest sporting event of its kind in the Lake District, it has been staged for more than 100 years and features classic events including Cumberland and Westmorland wrestling, track and fell races, cycle track races, hound trailing, and much more.
It had to be cancelled last year due to coronavirus.
Chairwoman of the committee Marjorie Blackburn and president Jak Hirst are keeping all committee members updated while actual meetings can’t be held.
Mrs Blackburn said: “We would dearly like to be able to say that we are going to hold the Sports on the usual Thursday, this year on July 29 and we will be doing everything we can to make this happen if circumstances allow.
“All we can do at the moment is to hope you are keeping safe and optimistically ask you to put the date in your diary.”
