This October fundraisers will be able to take part in the world’s biggest marathon whilst supporting local people with life limiting illnesses.

Eden Valley Hospice and Jigsaw, Cumbria’s Children’s Hospice have received a limited number of places for both the Virgin Money London Marathon and Virtual Virgin Money London Marathon, with both events taking place on October 3.

The Carlisle based charity is now looking for fundraisers to take on the 26.2 mile challenge during their 30th Anniversary Year.

Eleanor Viney, Fundraising Manager at Eden Valley Hospice and Jigsaw, explained: “We are delighted to receive places for the iconic Virgin Money London Marathon and the Virtual Virgin Money London Marathon.

“For many people a marathon is a daunting challenge but by signing up you will be embarking on a journey knowing that you are helping a person in our local community to receive the very best care, support and compassion when they need it the most.

“2021 is a special year for everyone connected with the hospice as we celebrate our 30th Anniversary and it is thanks to the local fundraisers completing challenges like the Virgin Money London Marathon that we have been able to help families throughout Carlisle and Cumbria for three decades.

“If you are interested in taking part in either the Virtual Virgin Money London Marathon or the physical event in London please get in touch.”

On October 3, 50,000 participants will take on the traditional course from London’s Blackheath to The Mall – an increase of more than 7,000 on the previous finisher record – while another 50,000 people around the globe run the 26.2 miles on a course of their choice, any time from 00:00:00 to 23:59:59 BST, in a virtual event.

The physical and mental health benefits of being active have been brought sharply into focus during the pandemic, and this biggest ever London Marathon offers more people than ever before the chance to experience these benefits while raising much-needed funds for charity.

One fundraiser to complete the Virgin Money London Marathon in aid of Eden Valley Hospice and Jigsaw was Paula Harmon, who in 2019 raised over £3,000 by completing the iconic challenge.

“The marathon itself was a very overwhelming experience from start to finish. It wasn’t easy to accomplish 26.2 miles and probably the only time I’d ever consider doing it,” said Paula.

“Seeing people I knew along the route was probably one of the highlights, as well as encouraging me to actually cross the finish line.

“For anyone out there who would like to or is considering doing the London Marathon do it. But be prepared for the emotional roller coaster you’re about to set off on.”

Whether fundraisers complete the Virgin Money London Marathon or the Virtual Virgin Money London Marathon the money raised will help the hospice to provide a compassionate hand for local people to hold for many years to come.

The charity is asking for a minimum sponsorship of £1,750 (plus a £50 non-refundable registration fee) to represent them in the Virgin Money London Marathon, or a £10 registration fee and minimum £175 sponsorship target to take part in the Virtual Virgin Money London Marathon.

If you would like to complete either the Virgin Money London Marathon or the Virtual Virgin Money London Marathon in aid of Eden Valley Hospice and Jigsaw, Cumbria’s Children’s Hospice visit www.edenvalleyhospice.org, www.jigsawhospice.org.
