A leading Carlisle councillor is calling for a developer to withdraw its controversial plan to build a new incinerator in the city.
Gareth Ellis, deputy leader of Carlisle City Council and councillor for Belah and Kingmoor, said NW Recycling, based at Rockcliffe, was granted permission last week to extend its solid recoverable fuels plant, and he suggested that this would stop it supplying the new incinerator.
The £40 million extension for NW Fuels, will double floorspace at one its units and was approved by the county council’s development control and regulation committee on Friday
Mr Ellis claims that because the Kingmoor Incinerator business plan is based on NW Recycling, Cumbria County Council contractor Renewi and Cumbria Waste Management supplying most of the waste, that without all three involved, the incinerator project will not be sustainable,
Mr Ellis added: “From the very beginning the incinerator has been controversial. A decision to locate it on the periphery of the most densely populated area in the county brought concerns.
“This from North West Recycling is a win-win for the area, new jobs and better environmental solutions to our waste.
“I’m calling on Verus Energy to put minds at rest for people in north Carlisle, and officially withdraw their proposal to build an incinerator at Kingmoor Park.”
