A local baker has raised enough money to start his dream microbakery through crowdfunding, hitting the initial funding target in just two hours.
Within two days he had pushed back his secondary goal and brought in £3,000 in contributions.
Crowdfunding contributors receive rewards for their pledges, including vouchers for free loaves of bread and pastries, which will be delivered when trading can properly resume – in late May to early June (depending on the COVID-19 restrictions being eased).
Dan Matthews, a local web developer and hobbyist baker, started “Inbread” in June of 2018, baking for friends from home, and has previously sold his wares through The Good Sister on Cecil Street, receiving positive feedback from bread loving locals.

The name, he admits, was a bit of fun originally, but it’s stuck with people and generates conversations:
“The name might be a bit silly, but we’re very serious about the quality of product,” he explained.
He is now working with the team from the upcoming Artwork on Devonshire Street to develop products for their upcoming launch, using their commercial kitchen space as an operation centre.
Dan spoke on the subject of the funds raised so far, and raising further money beyond the target: “I’m completely blown away by the support from everyone, especially during these difficult times.
“I really can’t thank people who have contributed enough. We’re going to keep raising funds as it will help buy us some larger pieces of equipment that will make our products more consistent and allow for a higher output of products.”
Inbread is a “microbakery” – a small hobbyist bakery that sells bread and sweet treats without a dedicated storefront, instead selling through other local stockists.
News of where to find products for sale locally will be announced via their Instagram at https://instagram.com/inbreadcarlisle
