A new spa set on the estate of a Grade-II listed Edwardian mansion is due to open this summer.
Scalesceugh Hall, located in Carleton, has undergone substantial refurbishment during the past year and now offers a collection of 15 luxury apartments exclusively for over 55s.
The 3.5-acre estate is also home to 13 age-exclusive Scandinavian-inspired villas. The company behind the creation of this unique retirement development, AB Living, now aim to create a spa and wellness centre at the site – The Spa by AB Living – which will offer a range of premium spa facilities for residents, locals and those visiting Cumbria.
Taking inspiration from Nordic culture where wellbeing is part of everyday life rather than something that you have to find time for, The Spa by AB Living aims to create a spa experience that places great importance on wellness and self-care.

Anne Craig, who has recently been appointed director for The Spa by AB Living, said: “Our concept at The Spa is to capture the Nordic way of wellness and how it is integrated into your lifestyle seamlessly instead of you having to try to make time for it.
“We aim to bring the true meaning of wellness to Cumbria, as sustainable wellbeing leads to a good quality of life, and we think everyone deserves that especially after the past year.
“Being stuck in our houses during the COVID-19 pandemic has made many of us realise that we’ve spent years rushing through life, putting a great deal of pressure on ourselves; be it with our jobs or committing to various activities to fill our time and productivity.
“I think people have had time to reflect and reevaluate what’s important in their lives, and ensuring we take the time to de-stress and look after both our physical and mental health has greatly come into focus.
“At The Spa by AB Living, we want to offer a place where people can come to take that moment to truly relax and switch off from the daily stresses of life, and have a real sense of calm and peace at our beautiful countryside location – whether it be brunch in our bistro; enjoying a relaxing massage; or benefiting from a rejuvenating, tailored skin treatment within our skin studio.”

At least 12 jobs will be created within the spa initially, including a reception and host team, therapists, fitness instructors, and a variety of bistro workers, with full and part-time opportunities available.
The facilities at The Spa will include a swimming pool with jet experience, as well as a sauna, steam room and rasul – an ancient Arabic bathing ritual that uses mineral-rich mud along with heat and steam to draw out impurities and leave skin hydrated and nourished.
The top floor facilities will include nail and skin studios, as well as a bistro with an adjoining terrace which will offer a space for spa users and visitors to “switch off” and enjoy an array of refreshments whilst looking out across the Scalesceugh estate gardens and nearby woodlands.
The bistro will offer a range of food and drink, from healthy brunches and lunches to smoothies and freshly brewed coffee.
The Skin Studio being created at The Spa by AB Living is set to offer a never-seen-before approach to facial skincare treatments in Cumbria, with a focus on results-orientated treatments tailored to each client’s specific requirements and desired results.
The team at AB Living also aim to expand their spa facilities into the adjoining woodlands, creating an area for guests to relax amidst nature and enjoy various treatments within the comfort of a purpose-built treatment and relaxation Nordic-style cabin.
