Coast to Coast challenge for Eden Valley Hospice – Damien Byrne, Chris Stott and Darren Moynan 1

A group of fundraisers will embark on a 130-mile cycle challenge to help a cause close to their hearts.

On June 19, a team of 30 fundraisers will embark on the Coast to Coast in a day cycling challenge in aid of Eden Valley Hospice and Jigsaw, Cumbria’s Children’s Hospice.

The challenge will be special for all the fundraisers as they remember loved ones who have been supported by Eden Valley Hospice and Jigsaw.

Darren Moynan, one of the fundraisers for the event, said, “I think locally most people know someone who has been cared for at the hospice, and with the pandemic and support for charities reducing, we felt it appropriate to raise some funds for Eden Valley Hospice.

“We completed the Ride to the Sun a couple of years ago raising money for Eden Valley Hospice, which everyone enjoyed. So we thought we would ‘step it up’ with the challenge and the Coast to Coast is longer and a lot more climbing.”

Fellow fundraiser, Chris Stott added: “I think we will have all had family and friends that have needed the support of the hospice at some point. The hospice and the staff do an amazing job and to keep the hospice running they massively rely on charitable donations.”

During the challenge, the group of fundraisers will travel from Workington to Tynemouth, as they cross the Lake District, Pennines and County Durham. A group of 20 fundraisers are set to complete the full route, with a further 10 fundraisers finishing the route after 60 miles at the summit of Hartside Pass.

Darren continued: “I am most looking forward to the banter as there will be a good few of us, it will be good crack. Also, I completed the ride 13 years ago in two days and some of the scenery was absolutely stunning.

“However, we are not looking forward to the hills. There is a lot of climbing, and I think that at some stage most of us will ‘hit the wall’, but with each other’s support we will get it done.”

The group of fundraisers would like to say a special thank you to MoynanSmith Accountants, Bailey & Stott Ltd. and Wiseone who are organising the event, and a massive thank you to the host of other local businesses who have pledged their support to the Coast to Coast cycling challenge and supporting Eden Valley Hospice and Jigsaw.

Each of the business will have their names emblazoned onto custom cycling jerseys which each ride will wear.

The money raised by the group of fundraisers will help Eden Valley Hospice and Jigsaw to provide the highest standards of specialist care and compassion to local people with life-limiting illnesses.
