Cumbria’s libraries set to reopen

All six of Cumbria’s main libraries are set to reopen as the latest easing of coronavirus restrictions comes into force.

Most other libraries will also be open from tomorrow, with revised opening hours in operation across the council’s sites.

Book browsing, borrowing and returns will be available as well as the services that they have continued to deliver throughout lockdown – select and collect, online services and home delivery services.

Other essential services can also be accessed at your library, including adult education courses and registrars.

For digital access to services, Cumbria County Council asks customers to book in advance for access to computers to ensure the best and safest service possible.

Check the council website for details of opening hours and available services at your local library.

As well as libraries services, Barrow, Carlisle, Kendal and Whitehaven Archive Centres will reopen to the public on Wednesday.

The new opening times are Wednesday to Friday from 9.30am to 1pm. Due to the COVID-19 situation, those wishing to visit an archive centre will need to book an appointment.

Deborah Earl, Cumbria County Council cabinet member for public health and local communities, said: “Once again, I’m so excited for our doors to reopen and welcome our customers back as I know just how much everyone has missed their local library.

“The safety of both our staff and customers remains our priority and our teams have been working extremely hard to ensure all safety measures are in place for the safe return of our customers.

“Although not all our usual activities will be available, there will still be plenty of resources available for our customers and book lovers to enjoy.

“It has been a challenging time and I can’t thank you all enough for your patience and understanding. Keeping ourselves occupied and healthy is vital during this time so this is the perfect opportunity to visit one of our much-loved library buildings, whether it be to browse our collection of books, open your mind to new courses or even just for a nosey.

“It’s great we can open all our main libraries and archive centres. Please check the website to make sure you are familiar with all the new advice regarding libraries and plan your visit in advance.’’
