Copeland residents urged to register for affordable housing

Copeland residents interested in buying a discounted home in the borough are invited to register their interest.

Under its Discounted Sale scheme, Copeland Council holds details of residents interested in buying a property – sold at up to 80 per cent of their market value – and then informs people on the register when qualifying properties become available.

People who cannot afford to buy on the open market, who have a local connection to the parish or town and meet other qualifying criteria, will be prioritised initially for discounted housing.

The number of Discounted Sale properties provided on a new housing development is secured through the planning process and, in most cases, the discount applies to any subsequent sales of the property.

Mike Starkie, Copeland mayor, said: “This is an excellent opportunity for people to get their foot on the property ladder.

“It allows Copeland residents to access high quality housing in an area they have links to, that would ordinarily be out of their price range.

“The register also helps inform the council of the need for housing – and affordable housing – in Copeland. It really is a win-win situation, and our team is on hand to assist residents with any questions they may have.”

The Discounted Sale Register is now live and application forms and all eligibility criteria are available at www.copeland.gov.uk/discounted-sales
