A couple plan to challenge themselves to the extreme in memory of their friend and to raise cash for Eden Valley Hospice.
On Saturday July 24, Caroline and Crispian Cook, both 54, will take part in The Lakeland 50, one of the greatest ultra-challenges in Europe.
They are running in memory of their friend Marian and to raise money for Eden Valley Hospice.
Caroline said: “Myself and my husband have chosen to run the Lakeland 50 in memory of Marian, my friend for over 30 years.
“Marian spent the last few weeks of her life at Eden Valley Hospice and the care she received whilst there was amazing.
“We have completed the Lakeland 50 before, but as Marian lived and worked in the Lakes and loved the Lakeland fells it seemed fitting to do it this time in her memory.
“We have been training since the beginning of the year and we are looking forward to the run at the end of July.”
The beautiful Lakeland 50 route starts at the northern end of Ullswater within Dalemain Estate before following the eastern shoreline as far as Howtown.
A quick climb and descent followed by a trek along the banks of Haweswater sees runners reach Mardale Head. The route from here visits Long Sleddale, Kentmere, Ambleside, Langdale and Tilberthwaite before the final climb and descent to the finish at Coniston.
Caroline said: “The event has great camaraderie, everyone chats along the way and each checkpoint is themed with the volunteers dressed up, playing music. So it really is a great experience.
“There isn’t really anything I am not looking forward to. Just when I think about 50 miles it seems such a long way.”
