The company behind multi-million-pound plans to move a big gas pipe in South Cumbria said its work has not resulted in the closure of a popular footpath.
Cadent is planning to move the pipe which runs alongside Ulverston Canal underneath the towpath.
Reports on social media this weekend, saying the towpath is closed, has prompted the firm to issue a statement.
It said: “We just wanted to remind everyone that the public footpath beside Ulverston Canal is open as normal.
“We know there’s been a little misunderstanding locally, with posts suggesting the footpath may now be closed.
“It isn’t. Please take every opportunity to enjoy the wonderful weather and scenery.
“Just for your information, what we have planned is major engineering to move a gas pipeline that runs unseen beneath the canal towpath.
“It’s an essential part of the network that ensures tens of thousands of homes in south Cumbria have gas for heating systems, as well as for hot water and cooking.
“When we are ready to begin that work, we’ll let you know, as it will involve a temporary closure of part of the footpath.
“Gas will stay on throughout the project.
“We’re liaising with many agencies – including the Environment Agency and ecologists, to protect against impact on things like flood risks and habitats for wildlife, such as otters and bats.
“We also working closely too with the local authorities and hopefully local schools throughout this multi-million-pound project.”
