A unique pub and Barrow landmark is set to reopen next month.
It was feared that the 300-year-old Ship Inn on Piel Island would never open its doors again when it closed due to the coronavirus pandemic.
A petition was launched to save the pub, which was signed by thousands of people.
It has been revealed that the pub will reopen, creating 10 new jobs, and be operated by The Piel Island Pub Company for 2021, run by the boss of leading local firm Lakeland Inns.
Rooms for overnight stays will be available to book while the option of overnight camping on the island is also an option.
Councillor Ann Thomson, the leader of Barrow Borough Council, which is the custodian of Piel Island and its pub, said: “We pledged we would reopen The Ship Inn as soon as possible after lockdown ended and I’m delighted this is now about to happen.
“Piel Island really is the jewel in the crown of our visitor and tourism offer here in the borough and we have long held ambitions for it to move towards a sustainable, environmentally friendly future with carbon neutral status.
“I’m delighted we are able to work with a new team to open the doors for the 2021 season so people can enjoy Piel once again.”
As well as The Ship Inn, the 50-acre island is also home to the ruins of Piel Castle, run by English Heritage, and a number of cottages that are occupied all year round.
The previous landlords of The Ship Inn opted to retire following the end of lockdown this year.
Kirsty Ridge, managing director of The Piel Island Pub Co. said: “We know how important it is to the whole community to see the Ship Inn open again so people can enjoy a visit to Piel this summer.
“Giving our customers a great experience is something we strive for. It’s at the heart of everything our team does, so we’re excited to work with Barrow Borough Council to reopen the doors of the pub in early July.”
The ferry to Piel Island leaves Roa Island every day during the summer season – usually April to September – between 11am and 4.30pm depending on the weather.
The opening date for The Ship Inn will be confirmed as soon as possible, the company said.
