Gold bullion and Wainwright sketches up for grabs at Mitchells’ auction

Gold bullion and artworks including original illustrations by Alfred Wainwright are among 1,600 lots that will be on sale at Mitchells’ antiques and fine art auction next week.

The private collection of gold and other coins is from a deceased estate in Eden and is being sold for charity. Proceeds, which could top £100,000. will be shared between World Wildlife Fund, World Vision and Médecins Sans Frontièr.

The haul includes 60 Elizabeth II 2014 1oz Britannias (estimate £1,000-£1,200 each) and 175 Elizabeth II 2014 uncirculated gold sovereigns (estimate £240-£280 each).

More than 50 antique clocks will also go under the hammer at the Cockermouth auction house from Wednesday June 16 to Friday June 18.

Among the paintings is a Mary Fedden (1915-2012) oil on canvas called Russian Landscape Moscow with an estimate of £6,000-£9,000.

The sale also features several pen and ink drawings by guidebook author Alfred Wainwright (1907-1991) including three Lake District views: Langdale Pikes from Lang How Tarns, Green Crag, Warnscale and Silver How, all with estimates of £600-£800.

One of the star furniture lots is a Mouseman stool from 1925-1930, which could make £1,400- £1,800.

There is also a cased taxidermy of a 39.5lb hen salmon, entitled Caught in the Eden at Caldew Foot February 28, 1912, by R Forster, Carlisle. The lot is expected to make £4,000-£6,000 at auction.

Day one of the sale will include gold bullion and coins, jewellery, watches and silver. Day two will include Asian art, ceramics and glassware, paintings, drawings and prints, objects of art and collectors’ items and metalware.

Day three features textiles, table boxes, wall clocks, barometers, mirrors, furniture, longcase clocks and tables.

The sale will be on view from Sunday June 13 from 11am-3pm, Monday 14 and Tuesday 15 from 10am-5pm and throughout each sale day.
