Coronavirus restrictions extended for four weeks

Boris Johnson

COVID-19 restrictions have been extended for another four weeks.

Measures to limit social contact will remain in place until July 19 due to the rapid spread of the Delta variant of the virus, Prime Minister Boris Johnson has confirmed.

Mr Johnson said the extension will allow more people to get vaccinated.

However, a few restrictions are being lifted on June 21.

Here’s what is changing from June 21:

  • The number of guests at weddings and wakes will no longer be limited to 30.
  • But venues will have to adhere to social distancing and hosts will have to do a risk assessment.
  • Table service will be required – with six people per table – and no indoor dance floors allowed.
  • Care home residents will no-longer have to isolate for 14 days after returning from visits outside. Exceptions will include high-risk trips such as overnight hospital stays.

Restrictions which were expected to be lifted on June 21, remain in place for the time being:

  • Limits on the number of people who can mix indoors and outdoors. Groups of up to 30 are allowed to meet outdoors and up to six people or two households allowed indoors.
  • Pubs, clubs, theatres and cinemas still have to operate within capacity limits.
  • Limited numbers of people allowed to attend sports events.
  • Nightclubs remain closed.
  • Ministers still have to consider the findings of reviews on face coverings and social distancing before deciding when all limits could be lifted.
  • The advice to work from home where possible will remain in place.
