Copeland Council is appealing for volunteers to help make improvements to some of its nearly 100,000 square miles of open spaces.

The Council is searching for volunteers of all ages, and abilities, to help:

  • plant trees and create community woodlands
  • cultivate Copeland’s nature reserves
  • improve the grounds of Distington Walled Gardens and Whitehaven Cemetery
  • research and apply for funding opportunities not available to the council

Emanuel Flecken, open spaces manager, said: “We’re looking for people who love being outdoors and want to give back to their community.

“We have vast areas of land to maintain, and unlimited potential to make our borough even more beautiful, environmentally friendly and an even greater habitat for local wildlife – but we can’t do it on our own – we need your help.

“There’s volunteering opportunities across the borough, in a range of roles, for those who can spare a little, or lots of time, from watering and weeding, to tree preservation, writing funding bids, and administration.

Emanuel Flecken

“We’re incredibly lucky to be surrounded by rolling green spaces and we want to maximise what we have, help the environment, and make sure these stunning scenes are here for years to come.

“There’s lots of funding available to help support green schemes that we aren’t able to apply for as a Council, and we’re looking to support volunteers, in a range of areas, to seek investment and make the best of our borough.”

Anyone who is interested in getting involved should email [email protected] or call 01946 598300.
