A two-wheeled family challenge is the centrepiece of a new fundraising project to promote accessible cycling in Cumbria.
The team at Watchtree Nature Reserve, near Wiggonby, wants to buy a Vello Plus, a bike specially designed for riders with limited movement.
The bike costs over £4,500, and to raise funds they are asking people to sign up to The Solway Cycle Challenge.
The event aims to encourage cyclists of all ages to explore 12 landmarks around the Solway plain.
Entrants can create their own routes to get to all the landmarks or use suggested routes created by Watchtree. The route can be completed in one day, or at any time between July 17 and September 30.
Senga Grave, Watchtree’s marketing team leader, said: “Watchtree prides itself on being one of the best accessible cycling centres in the North West.
“However, we currently don’t have enough bikes to cater for multiple wheelchair users at one time.
“From just a £3 membership rate, someone with additional needs can use our bikes for 90 minutes, spending time outdoors having fun and enjoying a bit of nature.”
Watchtree will be working with nearly 30 local food and drink vendors who will be offering discounts and deals for Solway Cycle Challenge ticket holders.
Dodd & Co Chartered Accountants is sponsoring the event.
All entrants will receive a certificate of participation and a Cycle the Solway medal.
Tickets are £15 for adults and £12 for children are now on sale now www.watchtree.co.uk/events.
