Police have confirmed that they have investigated several reports regarding the behaviour of individuals and licensing issues at Whitehaven Rugby League Football Club.

The club released a statement on June 4 saying that the club was dealing with an ‘ongoing situation’ as chairman Tom Todd resigned.

The statement called for time from supporters and the media to rectify the situation.

Less than a week later four directors had joined Mr Todd and resigned with immediate effect.

Steve Nicholson, Peter Boyle, Andrew Airlie, and Paul Shepherd all stepped down.

Sergeant David Macdonald, of Cumbria police, said: “Cumbria Constabulary are aware of concerns raised over some licensable activities at WRLFC.

“Copeland Neighbourhood Policing Team are working with Copeland Borough Council’s licensing department and directors and staff at the club to ensure the club is run in accordance with licensing objectives.

“We will not hesitate to take robust actions where required.

“Several reports have been taken regarding the behaviour of some individuals which have been investigated and dealt with in line with the wishes of those affected.”

A statement from Whitehaven RLFC said: “The club can confirm that it met with local licensing officers at the LEL Arena last week.

“The meeting was surrounding issues with how the marquee had been run.

“The directors present believe that the meeting ended in a positive note.

“Actions have been taken and further actions will be taken, to ensure the club meets its requirements. The club wish to thank the licensing officers for their understanding in this matter.”
