A free event dedicated to bringing the fascinating story of one of Barrow’s most historic streets to life is set to go online next month.
Barrow Borough Council was awarded £1.1 million of government funding by Historic England to restore properties on Duke Street over four years as well as launching a series of exciting cultural events.
Re:discover Barrow – An Armchair Walk, is the first of these events and will take place online on Wednesday, July 7 to explore and celebrate the rich and diverse heritage of Duke Street.
Using historical research and local people’s memories, it will tell the story of the street with a focus on a handful of key properties – from dusty beginnings through wealth and wartime to the Duke Street we know today.
The special event has been put together by a team led by Art Gene, which has researched the area’s history and uncovered stories from people who have lived and worked on Duke Street.
Councillor Helen Wall, mayor of Barrow and lead member for wildlife and heritage, said: “This event is going to be a fantastic opportunity for our residents to find out more about their town’s history and the businesses that used to trade on Duke Street.
“It’s so important to remember our history and celebrate our town’s triumphs and this project will do just that. Everyone involved has been phenomenal in putting together such fascinating facts and stories from Duke Street from the past to the present, it really will be a great event.”
Recently it was announced the popular street – which is populated by listed buildings of significant character – was to receive a further £100,000 from Historic England.
The latest award will further help to revitalise the conservation area through a collaborative community arts programme delivered over four years,following the Re:discover Barrow – An Armchair Walk event next month.
This online event will premiere a short film, including drone footage of the present-day street, historical images, interviews, and local voices, and will be followed by discussion with an expert panel who have been involved in the project.
The event is free and will last for around an hour from 6pm to 7pm.
